Vineyard: The Pian delle Vigne estate, located approximately four miles (six kilometers) from the town of Montalcino, takes its name from a characteristic 19th century railroad station located on the estate’s grounds. The property consist of some 460 total acres, 160 of which are planted to vines in vineyards with a southeastern exposure at 425 feet above sea level.The soil consists especially of clay and limestone and is full of small stones.
Vinification: After a careful selection both in the vineyard and in the cellar, the grapes were destemmed and delicately pressed; the must then went into temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks where it fermented and remained on its skins at a temperature of 82° Fahrenheit (28° centigrade) for an overall period of approximately three weeks. The wine was put through a complete malolactic fermentation and then began its aging period in 30 to 80 hectoliter (8,000-21,000 gallon) oak casks. After over two years, the Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino left its casks to then go through a lengthy period of bottle aging before commercial release.
2018 Tasting notes: The wine shows a brilliant ruby red color. Complex on the nose with balsamic hints of menthol and cloves that lead over to fruityaromas of cherries, plums, dates,and notes of cinnamon. A softand balanced entry on the palate is silkysmooth, characterized by soft tannins and sustained by exceptional freshness. Flavors linger on the finish with aromas ofvanillaand light hints ofviolets, typical of Sangiovese.
Paired with: Beef and game, combined with risotto with mushrooms.
